Mullen made his way up the stairs to the flat he was renting and turned the key in the lock. Seeing Clarissa had thrown him off guard a little. He needed time to think. And he couldn’t do that right now.

He just needed to relax for the time being until…

“Christ!” he exclaimed, jumping out of his skin. Simon Kemp was sitting in an armchair, playing on his phone, legs crossed. “How did you get into my flat?”

Kemp shrugged. “I have my methods.”

“I want you out of here right now, or I’m calling the police!” Mullen insisted, wondering if the universe was ironic enough to send Leah West to deliver this man from his doorstep.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Kemp replied calmly. “We’ve got a few things to talk about.”

“Like what?” Mullen spat out. “Don’t tell me. Leah West sent you to get me off her back, did she?”

Kemp shook his head. “She doesn’t even know I’m here. I have a feeling that if she did, she would castrate me.”

“So? Are you going to tell me to back off West again? Leave her be? Fuck off somewhere else?” he asked, having already imagined everything that Kemp could say.

“Not yet.”

Except that.

“You see, I’ve been doing some digging on you,” Kemp explained as Mullen took a seat, unsure what else he could do. “And over the last few years, you’ve certainly made a name for yourself… but the first few years seem blank.”

“I’m going to give you two words,” Mullen started, unwilling to indulge his guest. “Get. Out.”

But Kemp was unfazed. “And I’m going to give you two. David. Langdon.”

The colour drained from Mullen’s face. “God, I wish I’d got that on camera for the world to see,” Kemp exclaimed, remembering the last time Mullen had had him over a barrel and taking some grim satisfaction in being able to turn the tide.

“I always wondered why you were so averse to taking risks. I thought it was just cowardice,” Kemp explained, laying out the proof.

“As for David Langdon, at the moment, he’s serving a life sentence for four murders. Now, he has no idea who grassed him up. But there were some rumblings of a journalist who was tailing him, tracking his every move.

“The case was reported on an anonymous blog, no author was given. Probably just as well because it would mean that Langdon would have known exactly who cost him his life. The blog was taken down shortly afterwards, but I managed to find an archived version. Frankly, I’m amazed no one pinned it to you sooner, given the shoddy turn of phrase. I guess they figured if you had done anything, you’d be bragging to the stars. That’s the difference between Langdon and all those other people. You never had to worry about having a target on your back.”

“And even though he’s inside with no chance of getting out, he’s still got some powerful friends who are more than happy to do a few favours for him.
